Dartmoor
A region of rocky hills in Devon in the West of England. It's bleak but
I enjoy the bleakness, and the feeling of being miles away from the rest of humanity;
most of it is uninhabited now save for a few sheeps and ponies. It's open
for anyone to walk around and explore - but beware the marshy valleys.
| Hound Tor, one of the many granite rocks that top the hills of Dartmoor.
Justin Palmer is shown here for scale. |
Near Hound Tor, this hill has an almost Chinese feel to it. |
| Dartmoor has several dismantled railway lines, the legacy of old mining industry.
The one passing over this viaduct near the misnamed village of Lake has been converted to a bicycle track. |
The beautiful Lydford Gorge, carved from the softer rock at the edge of the moor. |
| Dartmoor is full of evidence of prehistoric habitation. Unlike the
rest of the country, nobody's farmed or built over it since then. This is the
ruined village of Grimspound. |
This is near another ancient settlement, with Arms Tor in the background. |
| The shadow of Brentor and it's church in the setting sun.
It's a perfectly normal small parish church that happens to be at 1100 feet. |
Vixen Tor, one part of the rock does have a certain foxy look. |
- Knowle Farm B&B -
where I stayed. Friendly, comfortable, good value, and the food is very tasty.
